Set in the sweltering heat of a Bengali summer, the story follows a newly married woman journeying to her in‑laws in a richly jeweled sari and a gold‑embroidered silk palanquin. Accompanied by loyal bearers, a vigilant maid, and two armed guards, she travels through rice‑fields and quiet villages, pausing beneath a shady tree by an artificial tank for much‑needed respite. The tranquil scene is tinged with the ever‑present danger of the wilderness, hinting at the precarious balance between hospitality and hidden threats.
When the party splits to fetch water, the maid’s curiosity leads her to a horrifying discovery: some of the bearers lie dead, while the survivors clash with a band of dacoits. Her frantic warning shatters the calm, thrusting the young bride and her protectors into a desperate struggle for safety. The narrative captures the vivid colors, customs, and sudden peril of rural Bengal, inviting listeners to feel the heat, hear the rustle of silk, and experience the tension as the journey abruptly turns dangerous.
