A fierce cyclone has torn through Queensland’s remote north‑eastern coast, leaving shattered settlements and a vanished schooner called the Eva. When word spreads that a few crew members might still be alive among the rugged hinterland, the small town of Cardwell bands together, dispatching a volunteer search party to track the lost men through tangled river mouths and tangled bush. Their mission begins on Hinchinbrook Island, where steep, boulder‑capped peaks and tangled mangroves hide both danger and the promise of clues.
Guided by local knowledge and a keen, if uneasy, awareness of the Indigenous groups that roam the region, the explorers set out across Gould and Garden islands, paddling through tidal channels and hunting for signs of the missing vessel. Along the way they confront the harsh realities of an untamed landscape—storm‑worn coastlines, relentless heat, and the ever‑present tension between curiosity and respect for the land’s original custodians. The early leg of their journey offers listeners a vivid portrait of 19th‑century frontier adventure, steeped in natural drama and human resolve.
