The collection gathers a dozen vivid sketches of turn‑of‑the‑century Budapest life, each one slipping between humor and a quiet, sometimes uneasy, reflection on ordinary missteps. The narrator’s eye is sharp, catching the little betrayals, unspoken jealousies and fleeting moments of tenderness that pulse beneath polite conversation. A modest setting—a boudoir, a café, a summer garden—opens onto larger questions about love, ambition and the social games that shape daily existence.
In the opening story, a nervous groom‑to‑be, Tamásy, wanders a friend’s parlour while Lilla, the host, dispenses a cryptic farewell lesson about “small crimes” of habit. Their banter reveals a web of past friendships, an enigmatic Clarisse who dazzles every crowd, and the way tiny flaws can both ruin and redeem a relationship. The dialogue feels effortless, the characters linger long after the scene ends, and the humor never masks the underlying melancholy.
Across the whole book, the tales combine witty observation with an intimate empathy for their subjects, offering listeners a portrait of a bygone era that feels surprisingly alive today.

A major Hungarian novelist and public intellectual of the early 20th century, she was widely read in her lifetime and became especially known for her memoir of revolutionary Hungary after World War I. Her legacy remains complicated because her literary fame was closely tied to right-wing politics and openly antisemitic writing.
