Description

A quiet, rain‑soaked September finds a solitary little girl, Anne Hereford, alone in a first‑class carriage, cloaked in mourning dress and clutching a box of belongings. The train’s rhythm and the kindly guard who watches over her create a fragile sense of safety as she drifts toward an unfamiliar station. Through brief, tentative conversations with strangers, we learn she was born in India, lost both parents, and now travels toward an unknown future.

At Nettleby, Anne is handed over to the bustling bustle of a railway depot, where a mysterious lady named Miss Williams offers her a simple comfort of plum tarts and tea. The journey leads her to the doorstep of the enigmatic Edwin Barley, hinting at new connections and hidden family ties that will shape her path. The opening paints a delicate portrait of loss, curiosity, and the quiet resilience of a child stepping into a world she barely knows.
