AN ADDRESS TO MEN OF SCIENCE;
By Richard Carlile
London: PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY R. CARLILE, 55, FLEET STREET. 1821. Price One Shilling.
ADDRESS,
In this stirring 19th‑century address, a determined reformer calls upon chemists, astronomers and other scientific minds to break the hold of superstition and expose false doctrines that dominate public life. He argues that scholars have too often concealed error to protect vested interests, and that a bold, public repudiation of faulty ideas is essential for progress and for Britain to claim its place as a beacon of enlightenment.
The second half of the work turns a critical eye to the nation’s schools, contending that a curriculum steeped in classical literature and dead languages wastes youthful talent. He proposes a curriculum built around astronomy, geography, natural history and chemistry, insisting that every teacher should be a scientist rather than a cleric. The essay sketches a practical educational system designed to awaken reason in young minds, promising a more informed, inventive society if its ideas take root.
