Description

Perched over 6,500 feet in the New Mexican plateau, Ácoma—often called the Sky City—has fascinated travelers since the first Spanish chroniclers of the 1540s. Its cliff‑side dwellings, formidable stone walls, and reputation for fierce warriors sparked both curiosity and dread among early explorers. Yet the Spanish never stayed long, leaving only fleeting diary entries that hint at a complex society hidden behind narrow ladders and sealed hatchways.

This study gathers every available record, from colonial narratives to the work of early anthropologists, and weaves them into a readable portrait for newcomers. Because the Ácoma people guarded their rituals closely, the author often has to infer customs by comparing them with neighboring Keresan and Zuni villages. The result is a vivid, if incomplete, picture of a people whose legends, architecture, and spiritual life continue to echo from the mesas.
