The story opens in a cramped mess hall where the restless pilots of the American Expeditionary Force’s 31st Pursuit Squadron chew over rumors and half‑finished jokes. Leading the banter is Tex Yancey, a lanky airman nicknamed “The Flying Fool” for his dark‑humored pranks and a grin that never quite reaches his eyes. Though his sarcasm masks a deeper weariness, the squadron can’t help but be drawn into his restless energy as they await the next order.
A new instructor is about to arrive, a mysterious figure that the men suspect will thrust them into fresh training despite weeks of idle waiting in France. Their frustration bubbles over as rumors swirl—American planes powered by a secret motor, French Spads, even old Camels—yet nothing materializes. With morale hanging by a thread, Yancey’s cynical jokes become a fragile shield against the looming uncertainty of what the night’s “chin‑chin” will actually bring.

Best known for fast-moving aviation adventures, this early 20th-century writer published under a pen name while also writing other fiction under his real name. His stories often mix flying, danger, and the kind of brisk action that made boys' adventure books so popular between the wars.
