In a remote Russian province, the sprawling estate of Kirila Petrovich Troekurov stands as a monument to wealth and authority. The landowner surrounds himself with lavish parties, endless guests, and a strict hierarchy that treats every courtesy as a demanded tribute. Even the village of Pokrovsko feels his influence, as his every whim ripples through the lives of servants, neighbors, and the sixteen young women kept in a secluded wing of his house.
Against this backdrop, the once‑proud lieutenant Andrei Gavrilovich Dubrovskij returns, now a modest neighbor with a handful of serfs and a reputation built on steadiness rather than opulence. Though Troekurov clings to his lofty connections, he respects Dubrovskij’s unflinching resolve, and the two men find an uneasy camaraderie rooted in shared origins. Their renewed encounters spark a subtle rivalry that ripples through the community, hinting at the challenges that will test loyalty, pride, and the fragile balance of power.

A brilliant poet, novelist, and dramatist, he is widely seen as the founder of modern Russian literature. His work helped shape the sound of literary Russian and still feels lively, sharp, and emotionally direct nearly two centuries later.
