Description

In a provincial town that has grown accustomed to the antics of Carsten Baltazar de Beer, a former clerk turned dream‑seller, an audacious plan begins to stir. De Beer proposes to launch a brand‑new daily newspaper built on “entirely new principles,” and he stakes a hefty sum of ten‑thousand crowns on the venture’s success. The idea, half genius and half folly, instantly captures the attention of the town’s leading merchants and eccentrics, who gather at their favorite club to debate the feasibility of a paper that could actually be worth reading.

The evening turns lively as Ole Berg, a lumber‑merchant‑turned‑mouthpiece, vows to fund the project if it attracts two‑and‑a‑half thousand subscribers within six months. A lawyer drafts a formal contract under the amused yet skeptical eyes of the crowd, while the resident journalist, Modali, watches the spectacle with a wry grin, already penning the first headline. As the ink dries, the townsfolk sense that the wager may bring more than just a newspaper—it could expose hidden ambitions and test the limits of their communal humor.
