Description

A determined city woman trades bustling streets for a solitary island on a remote lake, hoping a year of quiet will let her hear the seasons change. The family gathers for a farewell dinner, volleying predictions of frostbitten noses, broken legs and endless loneliness that only deepen her resolve. With a battered canoe, a lone house among birches, and a promise to herself to go it alone, she steps onto the trail toward an uncertain winter.

The island’s crisp air carries the calls of loons, the rustle of grouse, and the soft hopping of Canadian hares that linger at her doorstep. As evenings melt into twilight, she learns to coax fire from damp wood and to find comfort in the rhythm of wind over ice instead of city horns. Yet the quiet also amplifies every creak and shadow, turning simple tasks into quiet tests of will, and the promise of an isolated winter begins to feel both a sanctuary and a subtle threat.
