Set against the frosty streets of late‑19th‑century Budapest, the novel follows Hernyány György, a once‑privileged noble now reduced to skimming the remnants of his family’s fortune. Dressed in a gaudy yellow frock coat and a cracked hat, he drifts through the narrow úri‑utca, half‑laughing at the bustling shopkeepers while his mind whirls with a bitter mix of shame, hunger and a stubborn sense of honor. His internal monologue paints a vivid portrait of a man caught between aristocratic pretension and the stark reality of poverty, using biting humor to expose the hollow rituals of the upper class.
As the evening deepens, György’s desperate yearning for a proper meal leads him to a modest tavern, where an elegant, perfume‑laden stranger catches his eye. Their brief encounter ignites a fleeting hope for connection and a final, dignified supper that might restore a glimpse of his former glory. The story balances satire with melancholy, inviting listeners to contemplate the fragile line between pride and survival.

1867–1942
A sharp-eyed Hungarian novelist and journalist, he wrote vividly about Budapest at the turn of the century and about the changing lives of the city’s Jewish middle class. His work blends social observation, urban atmosphere, and a strong interest in questions of identity and belonging.
