Description

The story opens in a restless Portugal at the turn of the 1890s, when an English‑Portuguese diplomatic clash leaves the nation humiliated and angry. Amid the public outcry, a group of officers and civilians—many drawn from the very regiments meant to protect the crown—begin to conspire for change. Their plans are hastily formed, yet the feverish patriotism of the streets of Porto erupts into a brief, glowing flash of green and red flags on the night of January 31, 1891.

Through the eyes of a soldier on trial, the narrative captures the raw excitement and fear of those who dared to shout “Viva a República!” while the existing order watches uneasy. The account also sketches the broader social unrest that spreads from north to south, setting the stage for a daring, though unpolished, uprising against a monarchy that seems indifferent to the people's demand for justice.
