Description

A quiet New England village becomes the backdrop for a modest English family that has chosen an unassuming life far from the bustle of London. Colonel Gainsworth, a retired officer, lives with his young daughter in a modest farmhouse, tended by the loyal siblings Christopher and Mrs. Barker. Their reasons for crossing the Atlantic remain a whispered mystery, adding a subtle undercurrent to the otherwise peaceful routine of gardening, milking cows, and simple meals.

Since the loss of his wife, the colonel drifts through his days with a palpable melancholy, his appetite for life—and food—diminished. His daughter, shy and delicate, mirrors his sorrow, while the steady presence of the Barker siblings keeps the household afloat. As spring awakens the garden, the arrival of a new neighbor and the first hints of a budding friendship stir gentle curiosity, suggesting that healing may be possible even amid lingering secrets.
