Description

The quiet that fell over England after Elizabeth’s long reign gives way to a restless new era as the Scottish king, James VI, steps onto the English throne. His arrival, delayed by plague and escorted by a parade of newly knighted courtiers, sparks both hope for a lasting union with Scotland and anxiety among a council eager to secure its own influence. Amid lavish ceremonies at Theobald’s house, James begins to weigh the heavy expectations of a nation wary of royal excess.

Almost immediately, the new monarch confronts the tangled legacy of his predecessor: exhausted finances, costly monopolies, and a populace rattled by disease. He eases the most unpopular fiscal privileges, signalling a willingness to listen to public sentiment, while court factions—Northumberland, Cobham, the disgraced Raleigh—maneuver for favor. The early months set a precarious stage, hinting at the conflicts and conspiracies that will soon test the fragile balance of power.
