Description

The story opens in a gritty yet oddly beautiful railway city, where soot‑blackened walls and mist‑shrouded bridges give the streets a haunting charm. Amid the constant flow of hopeful strangers and cunning overseers, Lily Cardew watches the endless stream of workers from a train shed, feeling a renewed fascination with the people passing through. Returning home after a year away, she is greeted by her mother’s delicate violet bouquet and the familiar hum of a city that never truly sleeps.

Back at the Cardew household, Lily’s sharp wit and candid humor clash with her mother’s careful politeness, exposing the subtle tensions that have long held the family together. A mysterious box supposedly from her absent father arrives, hinting at troubles at the family mill and stirring questions about loyalty, duty, and the secrets that bind the Cardews. As Lily navigates these uneasy reunions, the bustling metropolis serves as both a backdrop and a catalyst for the personal dramas about to unfold.
