After the American brig Mentor runs aground on the remote Pelew group in 1832, two crewmen find themselves stranded on Lord North's Island, a tiny speck of land inhabited by a little‑known Polynesian tribe. The survivors, Horace and Benjamin, must negotiate a precarious existence among the islanders, whose customs and ways of life are foreign and often hostile. Their early days are marked by desperate attempts to secure food, shelter, and some measure of safety while the wreckage of their ship drifts farther from view.
During the two years of captivity the men learn the local language, allowing them to record daily routines, rituals, and the social structure of a people previously unseen by Western eyes. Their detailed observations furnish rare ethnographic and geographical data, from the island’s size and location to its climate and natural resources. The account balances harrowing personal hardship with a surprisingly measured curiosity about the culture that surrounds them.
