CHAPTER I - THE INCLINING OF A TWIG
CHAPTER II - HIS UNCLE AND HIS COUSIN
CHAPTER III - RODNEY ELMORE THE FIRST
CHAPTER IV - THE THREE GIRLS AND THE THREE TELEGRAMS
CHAPTER V - STELLA
When eleven‑year‑old Rodney Elmore sneaks two half‑crowns from a stranger’s mantelpiece, the thrill of the forbidden quickly eclipses the circus he so wanted to see. He hides the coins in his bedroom chimney, fearing discovery as much as the temptation to spend them. A later school outing finds him rescuing a fallen master while an unnoticed sovereign slips into his pocket, and he quietly proposes a subscription to replace the “lost” money—an idea that masks his own guilty gain.
These early episodes reveal Rodney’s natural talent for subtle manipulation and his willingness to bend honesty for personal advantage. As he grows, the small deceptions of childhood hint at a more elaborate web of lies that will entangle friends, relatives, and strangers alike, turning him into a consummate trickster whose charming façade conceals a far more calculated mind.
