Description

Isabel’s honeymoon quickly unravels when a delayed post brings a terse note that shatters the illusion of her husband’s wealth. The letter, addressed to “Mr. G. Lamb,” reveals that his respectable façade rests on his mother’s modest shop in Islington, not the fortune he has promised. As the truth dawns, the couple finds themselves stranded in a remote Scottish town, their savings depleted and creditors looming.

Faced with mounting debt and a marriage built on deception, Isabel confronts a painful choice. She packs a few belongings, eyes the empty rooms of the boarding house, and feels the first stir of independence. The story follows her struggle to reclaim agency amid a world of false pretenses, offering a vivid portrait of early‑20th‑century social expectations and the resilience required to break free.
