Description

Set against the bleak, wind‑swept ridge that separates Yorkshire from Lancashire, the story follows Kate Strangeways, a sensible and resolute woman caught in a marriage to the brutish quarry master Joe. Their home, the remote Peewit House, seems as isolated as the moor itself, and the couple’s daily life is a clash of temperaments—her quiet strength against his coarse, jealous outbursts. When Kate falls ill one spring, an eccentric yet generous old lady, Mrs. Lomax, arrives with a bottle of red port and unsolicited counsel, stirring a ripple of tension that reaches beyond the walls of the house.

Through vivid descriptions of the moorland and the tight‑knit village of Marshcotes, the narrative paints a portrait of stubborn pride, lingering resentment, and the quiet yearning for kindness. As Kate navigates the expectations of her husband, her maid Hannah, and the meddling generosity of Mrs. Lomax, listeners are drawn into a world where the harsh landscape mirrors the rough edges of human relationships, hinting at possible changes on the horizon.
