Description

In a forgotten palace on the outskirts of Pozsony, an enigmatic elderly countess lives a life of strict ritual and isolation. Every morning, the town’s humble workers—baker, fishmonger, greengrocer— bring their modest purchases to a tiny side window, where a silent hand records each transaction. The countess never leaves her home, communicating with the world only through a steady stream of letters that arrive and are returned without ever being opened.

Inside, the rooms are filled with an impossible garden of glass‑covered, artificial flora. Exotic blossoms, painted palms, and paper butterflies fill the space, all meticulously tended by the recluse who insists on removing any hint of real life that might intrude. As she gazes into a mirrored pool, she watches her own reflection change, noting every silver strand that replaces her once‑golden hair.

The narrative follows her meticulous routines, the secretive exchanges at the palace gate, and the subtle disturbances that threaten the fragile order she has built, inviting listeners into a world where silence and ceremony mask deeper mysteries.

About the author

Mór Jókai

Mór Jókai

1825–1904

A towering figure in 19th-century Hungarian literature, he wrote sweeping, adventurous novels and plays that made him one of his country’s most beloved storytellers. His life was just as dramatic as his fiction, shaped by politics, journalism, and the revolutionary spirit of 1848.
