Description

Set in a bustling Hampshire town, the story opens with the sharp‑tongued vicar Edward Western arguing with his genial brother‑in‑law, Joseph Sweetman, over the future of Philip, Edward's adopted son. Philip’s wild pranks—ranging from catapult‑blasted windows to a daring mayoral booby‑trap—have earned him both admiration among his peers and fierce disapproval from his stern guardian. The household crackles with humor and tension as Edward insists on a clerical path while Joseph defends the boy’s good heart and restless spirit. Their clash reveals a world where discipline and indulgence constantly vie for the boy’s loyalty.

As rumors of conflict on the Crimean front swirl through the town, Philip’s restlessness finds a new outlet: the promise of soldiering. The narrative follows his tentative steps toward enlistment, juxtaposing the rigid expectations of his upbringing with the lure of adventure and honor on a distant battlefield. Listeners are drawn into a portrait of a young man caught between duty to family and the call of a larger, uncertain destiny.
