Description

The story opens on a sun‑lit market day in Winchester, where the town square bustles with farmers, drovers, merchants, and the occasional pick‑pocket lurking in the crowd. The narrator paints a lively tableau of colourful characters—sturdy cattle‑drovers in tattered coats, well‑dressed gentlemen, and bustling women hawking sweets and hand‑made wares. Amid this vivid tableau, Mr. Benjamin Halbut, a respectable officer of the East India Company, wanders the stalls, his keen eye taking in the sights and sounds of ordinary English life.

Halbut’s thoughtful observations soon give way to a sense of purpose, as his commission draws him far from the familiar market stalls toward the distant battlefields of India. The narrative hints at the looming clash at Assaye, where the young officer will confront unfamiliar terrain and fierce opponents. With a blend of historical detail and personal reflection, the opening promises an adventurous journey from the quiet English countryside to the heat of colonial warfare.
