Description

In the twilight of the Civil War, the battered remnants of Lee’s artillery sit solemnly near Appomattox, a stark reminder of a cause on the brink of surrender. Captain Guilford Duncan, leading a small troop of mounted men, faces the grim reality that the war’s final fight is already lost, yet his sense of duty remains unshaken. With his loyal Sergeant Garrett at his side, he wrestles with the harsh choice between surrender and the thin thread of hope that still binds the Southern spirit.

Beyond the battlefield, the story shifts to the fledgling West, where former soldiers wrestle with new roles as builders of a continent still raw with opportunity. The narrative follows Duncan’s transition from battlefield leader to a “captain in the ranks” of peacetime labor, hinting at budding relationships and the challenges of redefining honor in a world reshaped by railroads and reconstruction. The early chapters set a tone of resilience, camaraderie, and the quiet courage required to forge a future from the ashes of conflict.
