Description

Set in the late‑eighteenth‑century English countryside, the story opens on the sun‑drenched grounds of Berrington Manor, where the aging Sir Henry Berrington frets over his presumed heir, a lanky fifteen‑year‑old named Michael. The manor’s genteel atmosphere clashes with Sir Henry’s disdain, hinting at family secrets and the weight of reputation that loom over the young heir.

Michael, a spirited and mischievous lad with a quick wit inherited from his Irish mother, roams the estate’s gardens and nearby fields in search of adventure. His encounter with a shy village girl while chasing a stray ball sets the stage for a tender, yet uneasy, connection that challenges the expectations of his lineage. As friendships form and old grievances surface, the novel promises a blend of humor, youthful daring, and the subtle tensions of a world bound by class and tradition.

A hugely prolific British storyteller, she wrote under the names May Wynne and Lester Lurgan, turning out historical romances, children’s books, and even early science fiction.
