Description

The story opens aboard a steamship departing the bustling port of Bombay, where the heat, coal dust and clamor of the dockyard give way to the steady rhythm of the engines. Two women, starkly different in dress and demeanor, stand side by side on the bulwark, their gazes fixed on the disappearing shoreline and the lives left behind. Their quiet conversation hints at hidden motives and a shared unease as the vessel pulls away from a land that feels both familiar and foreign.

Below deck, the laborers—lascar stokers and their companions—go about their grim duties, oblivious to the subtle drama unfolding above. The narrative weaves together the sights, sounds, and smells of colonial India, painting a vivid portrait of a world in transition. As the ship cuts through the water, the reader is drawn into the tension between duty, desire, and the looming mysteries that await those who dare to look beyond the horizon.
