The story opens in 1914 aboard the Laconia, cutting through the Mediterranean as a restless narrator, known by the nickname “Duffer,” ponders a secret that has driven him from Rome to Egypt. He has obtained cryptic notes left by an Italian Egyptologist decades earlier, suggesting a hidden cache beneath a remote desert peak called the Mountain of the Golden Pyramid. Together with his associate Anthony Fenton, a daring officer stationed in Khartoum, he prepares to launch an excavation that could rewrite the legends of ancient Sudanese queens.

Before the ship reaches Alexandria, a striking young woman in a white cloak appears on deck, reigniting a long‑forgotten romance that has haunted the narrator since childhood. Their playful banter masks a deeper connection, hinting that personal histories may intertwine with the hunt for the buried treasure.
