In a modest Finnish town at the turn of the twentieth century, twelve‑year‑old Tapani lives with his large family, his father struggling to keep food on the table. Though bright enough for fifth grade, his limp and frail build make him an unlikely candidate for school, and his father hopes the boy might find work instead. Tapani dreams of earning his own keep, even if it means stepping into a role that seems beyond his abilities.

A lively friend, Ville, bursts into Tapani’s cramped home with news of a vacancy: the town newspaper needs a carrier boy. Together they dash to the bustling print office, where glass panes gleam and the air smells of fresh ink. Inside, Tapani confronts a world of stern officials and towering stacks of paper, feeling both awe and anxiety as he wonders whether his limp will bar him from the job he so desperately wants.
