In a distant solar system, a team of investigators watches an unprecedented experiment: crystalline carbon—diamonds—have been granted self‑awareness. The newfound intellect quickly displays a fierce ego, using psychokinetic powers to manipulate other inert elements. Their reports detail how this carbon life‑form, dubbed “Prime,” emerges from the planet’s clay and begins to explore the limits of its own consciousness.
Prime’s curiosity leads to the construction of the first synthetic organisms. He fashions simple lichens and mosses, inventing a green pigment he calls chlorophyll to capture sunlight. Soon after, he fashions rudimentary animal‑like beings that feed on the very creations they depend on. As Prime’s creations multiply, the observer is left to ponder whether a self‑aware crystal can truly become a creator, and what the boundary between mineral and living might really be. The story invites listeners to contemplate the origins of life through the eyes of an astonishingly proud piece of carbon.
