Sextus Rollo Forsyte is a veteran hotel executive whose reputation for fine service is tarnished by a well‑known fondness for whiskey. After a string of short‑lived posts and a whispered blacklist, he receives an unexpected blue slip promising a generous salary, board and room as general manager of the massive Mahoney‑Plaza. The offer arrives just as he’s trying to escape his past, and he hesitates only a moment before stepping onto the sun‑wet streets of a California beach town, carnation pinned to his button.
The Mahoney‑Plaza looms five stories high, squeezed between low office blocks, yet it claims to host thousands of guests at once. Its lobby is a polished tableau of thick carpets, polished wood, and a constant stream of well‑dressed strangers, all moving through a maze of elevators and sand‑filled sand‑jars. As Sextus surveys the scene, his practiced eye catches every detail, while his introverted instincts wrestle with the paradox of a public role that might finally grant him the anonymity he craves.

1915–1979
A lively pulp-era science fiction writer, he built his reputation on clever short stories packed with odd inventions, sharp twists, and a playful sense of what the future might bring. His work appeared in magazines like Unknown, Astounding, and Galaxy, and it still feels brisk and inventive today.
