In a moon‑lit night at the crumbling castle of Shurland, the weary clerk Emmanuel Saddleton is called to his post just as the clock strikes twelve. A sudden, solemn knock reveals a vision unlike any he has ever seen: the radiant Saint Bridget herself, draped in jeweled robes and wielding a flickering, otherworldly flame. She appears at the most unexpected hour, demanding his immediate obedience and offering no explanation beyond a cryptic smile.

The saint’s urgency pulls Emmanuel away from his mundane duties and thrusts him toward the shadowed churchyard of St Bridget’s.
