Description

Jan is a twelve‑year‑old boy whose imagination is wired to the world of Native American lore and the whispering forest beyond his town. Together with his friend Glenjan, he devotes every spare moment to gathering scraps of wilderness knowledge—identifying birds, tracking squirrels, and copying the few books his modest school library can offer. Their secret games turn the town’s streets into a map of imagined camps, while the nearby woods become a classroom where each rustle holds a lesson.

The boys’ enthusiasm soon clashes with their families, especially Jan’s father, a respectable yet practical man who sees the boys’ pursuits as a distraction from school work. Undeterred, Jan slips into the fields and alleys, cataloguing unfamiliar plants and listening to the calls of unseen creatures, his heart racing between wonder and the fear of being caught. These early forays hint at a deeper bond with the natural world that will shape the boys’ choices as they grow.
