On a quiet summer evening the smoke from a modest hearth rises over Erkkilä’s pasture, where Maria tends a mismatched herd of cows. One of her own, a shy outsider named Maatikki, is tormented by swarms of insects, and Maria fashions a makeshift incense of peat and bark to drive the pests away. The ritual is both practical and tender: the cow nuzzles her hands, and Maria whispers affectionate, almost poetic, reassurances as if they were kindred spirits left vulnerable by the world.
But the peace shatters when another cow, driven by jealousy, attacks Maatikki, pinning its horns against the young animal’s side. Maria watches in horror as the struggle turns violent, the injured cow limp‑crawls through the mire and the whole scene erupts into frantic cries from the children in the house. The listener is drawn into the raw, earthy life of a Finnish farm, feeling the heat of the fire, the sting of the insects, and the sudden, gut‑wrenching fear that follows a moment of unexpected conflict.

A self-taught Finnish writer and social advocate from Kainuu, he rose from rural poverty to become one of the region’s earliest literary voices. His work drew closely on village life, hard labor, and the people around him, giving his stories a strong sense of place.
