He collaborated with William Fisher Markwick on The True Citizen: How to Become One, published in 1900 as a supplementary reader for seventh- and eighth-grade students.
The book combined lessons in character—such as honesty, courage, self-control, duty, and patriotism—with practical ideas about citizenship, community, and national life. Smith and Markwick also co-authored The South American Republics, published in 1901, extending their educational work into geography and history.
