About the author

Born in Ahrensburg, Germany, on February 21, 1880, Waldemar Bonsels became one of the best-known German writers of the early 20th century. He is most closely associated with The Adventures of Maya the Bee (Die Biene Maja und ihre Abenteuer), published in 1912, a book that turned the insect world into an imaginative, lively setting for young readers.

Although Maya remains his signature creation, Bonsels wrote more broadly than children's fiction alone. His books included novels, travel writing, and reflective works shaped by his interest in nature, spirituality, and human feeling, showing a range that went beyond the single title for which he is most remembered.

He died on July 31, 1952, in Ambach, Bavaria. Even so, Maya the Bee continued to introduce new generations to his work through translations and later screen adaptations, helping his name remain familiar long after his lifetime.
