About the author

Born in Ahrensburg in 1880, Waldemar Bonsels became a successful German author whose name is still most closely linked with The Adventures of Maya the Bee, first published in 1912. The book brought him lasting fame and helped establish him as a writer who could make the natural world feel lively, dramatic, and accessible.

Beyond Maya the Bee, he wrote novels, essays, and travel books, building a broad readership in the first half of the 20th century. His career was long and productive, and his books were widely known in German-speaking countries.

Bonsels died in 1952. Today he is remembered above all for creating one of the most enduring figures in children's literature, a character whose story continued to live on through later editions, translations, and adaptations.
