Description

Arriving in the bustling port of Cannanore, a German traveler finds refuge in a modest, single‑story house with a wide veranda that stretches across the façade. The landlord, Rameni, greets him in halting English, proudly describing the overgrown garden teeming with exotic birds, insects and a shy cobra that lives in a glass enclosure. Their negotiations are a mix of curiosity and caution, as the traveler learns that the rent is low but the landlord’s promises are richly generous.

Life settles into a rhythm of morning markets, shared meals, and daily deliveries of eggs, fruit, and freshly caught fish from Rameni’s well‑meaning staff. The house becomes a living tableau of cultural exchange, with the servant Panja offering relentless advice while the mysterious cobra watches from its crystal cage, uncomfortable with its captive existence. The traveler’s fascination with the serpent hints at deeper questions about respect, freedom, and the hidden histories of the land.

As the sun filters through lace‑trimmed curtains, a quiet unease settles in the air, suggesting that the seemingly tranquil garden holds secrets that will soon ripple through the newcomer’s Indian adventure.
