About the author

William Gershom Collingwood was an English author, artist, and antiquary whose work bridged literature, visual art, and local history. Born in 1854 and long associated with Coniston in the Lake District, he became known not only for his own writing but also for his close connection with John Ruskin, serving as Ruskin’s secretary and collaborator during an important part of his career.

Collingwood wrote across several fields, including novels, travel writing, Norse and Anglo-Saxon studies, and art history. That range gives his books a distinctive character: they are often imaginative and readable, yet grounded in careful scholarship and a deep interest in place, myth, and the past.

He was also an accomplished painter and a respected figure in regional archaeology and cultural life, helping to preserve and interpret the heritage of the Lake District. He died in 1932, leaving behind a body of work that still appeals to readers who enjoy classic writing enriched by history, folklore, and a strong sense of landscape.
