About the author

Born in 1854 and educated at Liverpool College, University College, Oxford, and the Slade School, W. G. Collingwood built an unusually varied career as an artist, author, and historian. He became closely associated with John Ruskin, worked as Ruskin’s secretary, and later wrote an important biography that helped shape how later readers understood Ruskin’s life and ideas.

Collingwood is also remembered for his deep interest in northern history and archaeology. He studied Norse culture, contributed to the understanding of Viking-age Britain, and wrote on local history, folklore, and monuments, especially in Cumbria and the Lake District. That mix of scholarship and storytelling gave his work a lively, accessible character.

Alongside his historical writing, he painted and designed, and he played an active part in cultural life in northern England. He died in 1932, leaving behind a body of work that links art, landscape, and the medieval past in a way that still feels distinctive.
