CHAPTER VIII. THE GIANT COMES IN.
The tale opens on a windswept coast where a displaced Viking family seeks refuge after the wars of King Harald Fairhair. Swein Biornson and his wife Unna, descendants of the old Norse chieftains, stumble upon a hidden inlet that becomes the settlement of Greenodd, a place where sea and hill meet in quiet shelter. Here they raise a son, Thorstein, whose cradle rocks to the sound of sewing and low‑cunning songs, while the surrounding fells promise both bounty and danger.
As summer wanes, Unna balances motherhood with the hard work of carving a homestead from virgin moorland, teaching Thorstein the rhythms of farm and forge. The newcomer’s presence draws the attention of neighboring clans and of a restless English lord who watches the new Norse foothold with suspicion. Against this backdrop, the young boy’s early days hint at the larger struggles that will shape the Northmen’s place in Lakeland.
