Thomas Peter Krag

1868–1913

A Norwegian novelist, playwright, and short-story writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was known for moody, imaginative fiction shaped by nature, mystery, and restless inner lives. Though less widely read now, he was once popular enough that several of his books became bestsellers in Denmark.

About the author

Born in Kragerø in 1868 and raised in Kristiansand, Thomas Peter Krag became one of the notable Norwegian writers associated with the neo-romantic mood of his time. He wrote novels, plays, and short stories, and his work often turns toward the sea, forests, strange events, and the hidden forces of the human mind.

Krag made his literary debut in 1891 and went on to publish nearly 30 books before his death in 1913. During his lifetime he also lived in Copenhagen, and some of his books found a wide readership in Denmark, where they were published as bestsellers.

Today he is less well known than some of his contemporaries, but his writing still stands out for its atmosphere and strong feeling for landscape. He is also remembered as part of a literary family: his younger brother, Vilhelm Krag, became an important writer as well.
