A sharp-eyed Finnish realist, he wrote vividly about everyday life and became especially admired for stories that capture the world of children with unusual warmth and honesty. His work also helped bring modern urban life in Oulu into Finnish literature.

Born in Oulu on April 9, 1862, Teuvo Pakkala was a Finnish author, playwright, reporter, linguist, and teacher. He was born Teodor Oskar Frosterus and is often placed among the realists of the late 19th century; some sources also describe his work as naturalist.
Pakkala is especially remembered for his keen portrayals of children and for writing about ordinary life with close observation and moral seriousness. Finnish literary sources also note his importance as one of the country’s first major urban realists, following the social changes of industrializing Oulu through both journalism and fiction.
Although he published a relatively small body of work, his best-known writing has had lasting influence. He died on May 17, 1925.
