Born in Lisbon in 1857, Teixeira Bastos was a Portuguese poet, journalist, and essayist who built a strong reputation in the final decades of the 19th century. He is often remembered not only for his literary work, but also for the energy he brought to criticism and public debate.
He collaborated with Teófilo Braga on several literary periodicals and became known as one of the early promoters in Portugal of the positivist thought of Auguste Comte. Alongside poetry and journalism, he also wrote essays on social and political questions, showing a wide range of interests beyond strictly literary subjects.
Teixeira Bastos died in Lisbon in 1902. Though not as widely read today as some of his contemporaries, he remains an interesting figure for listeners who enjoy authors connected to the intellectual and cultural currents of modern Portugal.
