About the author

Born in Llanuwchllyn in 1858, Owen Morgan Edwards became one of the best-known Welsh historians, writers, and education reformers of his time. He studied at Bala and Aberystwyth before going on to Oxford, and his career combined scholarship with a gift for writing in a lively, accessible way for ordinary readers.

He wrote widely on Welsh history, travel, and national life, and he is especially remembered for helping to awaken pride in Welsh language and culture. Through his books and journalism, he encouraged readers to see Wales as a country with its own rich story, landscapes, and traditions.

Edwards also played a major public role in education, serving as the first Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales. He was knighted for his service, and after his death in 1920 he remained an influential figure in Welsh cultural life, admired for linking learning, public service, and a deep love of Wales.
