About the author

Born in Sodankylä on June 9, 1866, Santeri Ivalo was a Finnish writer, journalist, and historian. He was born Herman Alexander Ingman and later took the name Santeri Ivalo. Alongside his literary work, he completed a doctoral dissertation on the history of northern Finland.

Ivalo played an important role in Finnish journalism. He was involved in founding Päivälehti, the paper that later developed into Helsingin Sanomat, and he also served for a time as editor-in-chief. His background as a historian gave his writing a strong sense of place and period.

He is especially remembered as a pioneer of the Finnish-language historical novel. His books helped establish the genre in Finland by combining research, national history, and readable storytelling. He died in Helsinki on January 25, 1937.
