Description

A storm‑tossed morning on the western shore of Taivassalo awakens a solitary fisherman, whose routine is shattered when a fleet of imposing, dark‑sailed vessels appears on the horizon. The crews, clad in foreign uniforms, unload their commanders and begin murmuring about a king arriving with an army. Curious locals gather on the bleak shoreline, whispering about the significance of these strangers and wondering whether war is looming over their quiet villages.

Amid the tension, a young nobleman from the Horn family steps ashore, his presence both reassuring and unsettling to the fishermen. He and his companions debate the purpose of the expedition, hinting at fragile alliances and the fragile peace along the border. As the first interactions unfold, the novel paints a vivid portrait of early‑19th‑century Finland—its rugged coast, its tight‑knit communities, and the uneasy anticipation of a conflict that could reshape the region.
