About the author
The San Francisco Museum of Art opened in 1935 under founding director Grace L. McCann Morley. It was created as the first museum on the U.S. West Coast devoted entirely to 20th-century art, and it later became the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, widely known as SFMOMA.
Over the years, the museum expanded from its early home in the War Memorial Veterans Building into a major institution for modern and contemporary art. Its history includes exhibitions, education programs, and media outreach such as the early television series Art in Your Life, showing how seriously it took the idea of bringing art to a broader public.
