An Argentine writer and journalist, he brought sharp observation and lively humor to stories about everyday life, politics, and the changing country around him. His work moves easily between fiction, travel writing, and reportage, which gives it an unusual sense of immediacy.

About the author

Born in Mercedes, Buenos Aires Province, on April 19, 1867, Roberto Jorge Payró became one of Argentina’s notable writers and journalists. Early in his career he founded the newspaper La Tribuna in Bahía Blanca, and he later worked for La Nación, where reporting and travel became a major part of his literary life.

His books are often praised for mixing social observation, wit, and a strong feel for local settings and characters. Along with fiction, he published travel and journalistic works shaped by journeys through Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Andean region, helping readers picture parts of Argentina and South America that were still little known to many at the time.

Payró died in Lomas de Zamora on April 8, 1928. He is still remembered as a versatile author whose writing connected journalism and literature in a fresh, readable way.
