Born in Lexington, Missouri, in 1927, Randall Garrett was an American author who wrote science fiction and fantasy and became a regular contributor to magazine fiction in the 1950s and 1960s. He published a large amount of short fiction and novels, sometimes under pseudonyms, and built a reputation as a fast, versatile professional writer.
He is best remembered today for the Lord Darcy stories, which mix classic detective plotting with an alternate world where magic works and science took a different path. His novel Too Many Magicians helped make that series a favorite with readers who enjoy both mystery and speculative fiction.
Garrett also collaborated with other writers, including Robert Silverberg, and remained an active presence in science fiction circles for many years. He died in Waco, Texas, on December 31, 1987.
