About the author
Born in Lexington, Missouri, in 1927, Randall Garrett was a major contributor to Astounding and other science-fiction magazines during the 1950s and 1960s. His work ranged from fast-paced science fiction to humorous fantasy, and he was known for his energetic output and playful use of language.
Garrett’s best-known creation is Lord Darcy, a detective whose cases unfold in a twentieth-century world where magic works and has been scientifically codified. He also collaborated with Robert Silverberg under the name Robert Randall, and with Laurence Janifer as Mark Phillips. Garrett wrote under numerous other names, including David Gordon, John Gordon, Darrel T. Langart, and Gerald Vance.
After serious health problems in the late 1970s, Garrett’s writing career declined. He died in Waco, Texas, on December 31, 1987, leaving behind a wide-ranging body of science fiction, fantasy, short stories, and collaborations.
