by Raimón Casellas
Born in Barcelona in 1855, Raimon Casellas was a Catalan journalist, art critic, writer, and collector whose work linked literature, visual art, and cultural history. He became an important figure in the Modernisme movement and wrote widely about painting and artistic life, especially in Catalonia.
As a novelist, he is best remembered for Els sots feréstecs (1901), often described as the first modernist novel in Catalan and an early example of rural naturalism. His fiction is known for its dark atmosphere, psychological tension, and vivid sense of place, while his shorter prose added to his reputation as a distinctive literary voice.
Casellas was also deeply involved in the study and preservation of Catalan art, including Gothic painting, and worked with museum institutions as well as the press. He died in Sant Joan de les Abadesses in 1910, leaving behind a body of work that matters both to readers of Catalan literature and to the history of art criticism.
