About the author

Born in Uniondale, South Africa, on 23 December 1891, he became an important figure in Afrikaans letters as an academic, critic, writer, and lexicographer. Reference sources consistently describe him as a major contributor to Afrikaans language and literature, and his work ranged from literary studies to dictionary making.

He is especially associated with the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal, and his name appears on editions of that landmark dictionary as well as on his early literary study Die prosa van die twede Afrikaanse beweging (1922). He also wrote under the pen names “Oom Sarel” and “Jan Kloppers,” showing a career that moved between scholarship and more general writing.

He died in 1970, and his reputation has largely rested on the steady, foundational work he did for Afrikaans as both a language of literature and a language of record. For listeners interested in South African literary history, he stands out as one of the people who helped give Afrikaans its critical and lexicographical backbone.
