About the author

Born on May 28, 1877, in what was then the Russian Empire, Oscar Vladislas de Lubicz Milosz wrote mainly in French and became an unusual figure in European letters: a writer deeply drawn to symbolism, myth, and spiritual questions. His work includes poetry, novels, and plays, and readers often describe it as passionate, visionary, and meditative.

Milosz spent much of his life in France, but he also played a public role in Lithuanian history. After Lithuania regained independence, he served as a representative of Lithuania in Paris and at the League of Nations, linking his literary life with diplomacy.

He died on March 2, 1939. Though he has never been as widely known as some of his contemporaries, he remains important for the intensity of his poetic voice and for the way his life connected French literature with Lithuanian cultural history.
