About the author

Born in Creswick, Victoria, in 1879, he built an early career as a newspaper illustrator before becoming widely known as an artist, cartoonist, novelist, and children’s author. He worked across drawing, painting, etching, sculpture, and writing, and became especially famous for energetic images filled with myth, humor, and rebellion.

His books include the beloved children’s fantasy The Magic Pudding, while his wider body of work ranged from satire to fiction for adults. That mix of popular storytelling and daring visual art made him both admired and controversial during his lifetime.

He died in 1969, but his reputation has lasted well beyond his era. Today he is remembered as a major Australian creative figure whose work still stands out for its confidence, wit, and unmistakable style.
