About the author

Born in Creswick, Victoria, on February 22, 1879, he grew up in a famously creative family and began working young as an artist and illustrator. Over time he became one of Australia’s most prolific cultural figures, working as an artist, etcher, sculptor, novelist, critic, and cartoonist.

He was especially known for his sensual, energetic style and for works that mixed mythology, humor, and the Australian landscape. Alongside his visual art, he wrote fiction including The Magic Pudding, a children’s classic that has remained his best-known book for generations of readers.

His career brought both admiration and controversy, but his influence endured well beyond his lifetime. He died in Springwood, New South Wales, on November 21, 1969, and is still remembered as a major figure in Australian art and literature.
